Putting it all togetherAssuming you have several pages and several images that you want to use in your site, they should all be on the same directory (folder) on your computer when you prepare the site. They must stay together when they are uploaded to your host computer.Your host will tell you what you should name the main page in the directory. Usually it is index.html or index.htm but your host may tell you to use a different name. This is the file your visitor will be directed to when the URL he enters into his browser is the URL of your directory, without giving a name for a file. You may name your other files anything you want, as long as the name ends with .html or .htm - I recommend using a word that you will be able to remember easily, for convenience when you want to make changes to your site. Besides index.html you might want to have family.html and jokes.html for example. You could call your images jimmyintree.jpg kidsonporch.gif and 3dogs.gif and you'd know what they are by just looking at the names of the files. The names should be all one word, but the word may be made up of several words all run together. REMEMBER - Be consistent with your capitalization. It doesn't matter when you are testing the site on your own computer, but as soon as you upload the site, it MUST be correct. I think the best way to do it is to ALWAYS use lower case. If you always do it the same way, you're less likely to get confused. It's usually best to have links on your main page (index.html) to all your other pages, and have links from all your other pages back to your main page. Whether or not you have links between your other pages is up to you. Don't forget to have an email link on your main page. People might want to get in touch with you. |
