Thank you for visiting WebMasterKnowHow.com - If you can suggest things that should be added to the site I would like to hear about them. Anything regarding hosting, HTML, attracting traffic, problems and mistakes. I intend to make this site as useful as I can, and with that in mind I'm trying to add at least one new topic every week.

What NOT to do

Making search engines love you

Search engines love META Tags. It saves them the work of figuring your page out on their own. They will do their best, but you are not likely to like the results of their efforts.

Take a look at the sample META Tags on my META TAGS page. Copy the sample tags to be sure to get them right.

Don't try to trick the search engines. Your META Tags should refer to things that really are in your page. If you try to get traffic to your pages by trickery, and the search engines figure it out, they may refuse to index your site at all. One commom trick is to use certain words at the bottom of the page, over and over again, using text the same color as the background. The theory is that your human visitors won't see the text but the search engines will. Nice try, but they are more sophisticated than that, and you will probably be sorry you tried.

If the same word appears in the page title, the META Description, the META Keywords, and in the body of the page, your page will probably be found easily by someone who enters that word into a search engine. Unless of course the word is "SEX" which is in so many hundreds of thousands of pages that you don't have much of a chance of getting noticed that way.

There are 2 ways search engines find out about your page:

You tell them.
They follow links.

A simple way to tell them is to go to http://www.correlationsystems.com/addurl/ or a similar site, and follow their simple instructions to tell the most popular search engines about your pages. After a few months you should go back and do it again. Free.

There are services that will, for a fee, submit your site to hundreds or thousands of search engines. In my opinion it isn't worth the effort. There are just a few search engines that are used by the majority of your market. As long as you are sure those few know about you, I'd say, don't worry about the others. They will probably find you eventually.

In order for search engines to follow links to your site, there have to be some links on other sites pointing to yours. If you have a friend with a website, ask if he will exchange links with you. Most people will be happy to do that. You can also ask strangers to link to you if you have information that would be interesting to their visitors. If you start by putting a link to them on your site, then email them telling them where they can find the link and requesting a link back, you will have a good chance of getting the link. The more links there are to you, the better. You should have a "Links" page that you put links to all your friends on.
