Thank you for visiting WebMasterKnowHow.com - If you can suggest things that should be added to the site I would like to hear about them. Anything regarding hosting, HTML, attracting traffic, problems and mistakes. I intend to make this site as useful as I can, and with that in mind I'm trying to add at least one new topic every week.

What NOT to do

Be sure it's right before you go public

When you think you are finished, and you're ready to take your new page public, you're wrong. Now it's time to check and double check it.

You should have at least 2 browser programs on your computer: A recent version of Netscape Navigator, and a recent copy of Internet Explorer.

Look at your page with both browsers. If they don't look the same, figure out why not.

Resize your browser window to about half the size of your desktop. Does the page still look OK? Do this with both browsers.

Change the size of the text your browser uses. Check very large and very small sizes, using both browsers.

Change your monitor setting and view the page in 640x480, and 1024x768.

After you have fixed any problem you found, it's time to upload it to your server for final testing.

Once it's on the internet, check all the links. Links that worked on your own computer may not work on your server. Capitalising of filenames is frequently the problem. Another problem is naming a file with more than one word. Spaces within a filename may work in your computer, but not on the net.

When it looks right to you, it's time to have an "expert" look at it. There are quite a few services out there that will check your page for errors. They will verify your links, check your loading time, and alert you to any mistakes you may have made. Free.

The service I have been using lately is http://www.siteowner.com. It's a free service.

Now that you have made the page as good as you can, it's time to let the world know about it. You need to tell the major search engines about it. Go to http://www.correlationsystems.com/addurl. Tell your friends about it. Offer to make a link to your friend's site if he will make a link to yours.
